  • Luke 16:19-31
  1. Souls are lost
    1. Luke 16:23
The rich man knew he was lost in the torments of Hades.
    2. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4
Those lost on earth often don't know it because Satan has blinded them.
    3. Luke 19:10
Jesus knows that people are lost in sin. That's why He came to earth: to save them! We should make that our mission, too.
    4. Romans 3:23; 6:23
Everyone commits sin and the consequence of sin is punishment. Such knowledge should motivate us to teach salvation to the lost.
  2. Family ties cannot save
    1. Luke 16:24-25
The rich man was acknowledged to be a son of Abraham, but it didn't spare him the torment he was suffering.
    2. Matthew 3:8-9
John taught that family ties were of no lasting value.
    3. Ezekiel 18:20
We shall be judged by our own behavior, not that of our parents.
  3. The lost need our concern
    1. Luke 16:27-28
Even in torments, the rich man feared for the souls of his loved ones. He loved his family too much to desire that they follow him to damnation.
    2. 2 Corinthians 5:11
The thought that others stand in jeopardy of eternal punishment should motivate us to teach them.
    3. Romans 9:1-3
Paul was so concerned for the souls of his countrymen that he nearly wished he could take their punishment for them.
    4. Romans 10:1
Paul prayed for the lost to be saved. Do we?
    5. 1 Corinthians 9:19-22
We should be willing to adapt ourselves in order to reach the lost.
    6. Proverbs 11:30
Don't you want to be a soul winner?
  4. God's word is the final authority
    1. Luke 16:29-31
The rich man learned from Abraham that those who refuse to submit to God's written word would not be convinced even if they witnesses a grand miracle.
    2. Mark 8:11-12
So many say that if God would just show them some kind of sign, they would believe. Jesus dealt with the same kind of people in His day. He refused to show them a sign because their hearts were already hard.
    3. 1 Corinthians 1:22-24
The message of the cross may not be as flashy as some great miraculous event, but it is what will save those who believe it.
  5. The fate of a soul is sealed at death
    1. Luke 16:26
After death, the rich man discovered it was too late to change his fate. There was no way to pass from torments, across the gulf, to comfort.
    2. Luke 13:23-30
Some will find themselves on the wrong side of a locked door, knocking to be let in, but it will be too late.
    3. 2 Kings 20:1
Prior to death, one should have his house in order because there will be no remedy later.
    4. 2 Corinthians 6:2
There's no time like the present to be saved!
